Lodi Lake Wildlife Update: What the Testing Revealed
The City of Lodi has released its findings on the deer deaths reported in and around the Lodi Lake Nature Area over the past several months. Working with San Joaquin County, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), UC Davis, and other partner agencies, the City reports that testing on sampled deer points toward natural disease and poor overall animal health — not intentional poisoning, and not an immediate public health concern.
Putting Animal Deaths at Lodi Lake in Perspective
When animals are found dead near a beloved community resource like Lodi Lake, the immediate questions are always the same: What happened? Is it dangerous? How long until we know? This update places recent animal deaths at Lodi Lake and the Lodi Lake Nature Trail in the context of similar events that have occurred across Northern and Central California over the past decade. For each comparable event, we document what species were affected, what cause was ultimately determined, and — critically — how long the investigation took from initial reports to published results.
The goal is not to speculate on Lodi Lake's current situation, but to equip Friends of Lodi Lake members and the broader community with realistic expectations about wildlife mortality investigations.
Unexplained Animal Deaths at Lodi Lake
Over the past several weeks, park visitors and city staff have discovered deceased animals in and around the Lodi Lake Nature Area—including multiple deer, at least one fox, and waterfowl (ducks). None showed visible signs of injury, predation, or trauma. The City of Lodi Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department is actively investigating in coordination with state wildlife health agencies.
